Fandom

lea_hazel: Don't make me look up from my book (Basic: Reading)
This past week I got anonymous kudos on (almost) all my AO3 fics in succession. I am pretty sure it was all the same anon, since there was a hit on my [livejournal.com profile] captchalogue collection, then one each on a bunch of fics that don't usually get much attention. Including one totally obscure Veronica Mars fic.

[community profile] fannish5: Fanon 'facts'. I'm using the definition of fanon where I can include stuff that's just in my head, as opposed to "not actually canon but commonly accepted in fandom as such."

Lost Girl: Until canon actually states otherwise (which seems pretty likely) I am still assuming that Trick possible spoilers through speculation )

Veronica Mars: Despite that it goes against everything canon says, including the trailer for the fourth season that never happened, I think Veronica would make a terrible FBI agent. I see her giving it her all, then being disappointed and burning out after about five years, going back to PIing but with better credentials. I know it's almost painfully noir, but hey, if the shoe fits.

Runaways: 1. To everyone's shock, Chase is the only one who eventually goes to college. 2. Although he'd never admit it, he comes to think of Victor as the best friend he ever had. 3. Molly becomes a superhero under her own name. 4. After her eighteenth birthday, Karolina goes on a traditional young adult 'finding herself' trip... in space. 5. Klara gets used to the whole time travel shtick and ends up settling down in the twenty eighth century.

MLP:FIM: Mr. and Mrs. Cake are Pinkie's second cousins - they share the illustrious laughing Grandma Pie. Pinkie takes much more after her grandma than either of her parents. Her dad was sort of a fluke/black sheep, and her sisters take after him: one inherited the rock farm and the other is an accountant.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: Once she proves herself trust-worthy, not to mention entertaining, Ty Lee enters a triad relationship with Sokka and Suki.

Fannish Fathers

So, apparently it is Father's Day or something because [community profile] fannish5 is asking about fathers, good and bad. This list could basically go on forever because the pop culture I'm immersed in is obsessed with the father-son relationship, and to a lesser extent the father-daughter relationship as encapsulated by daddy's girls. Me, I pay more attention to mother-daughter relationships, for various complex reasons. So this list could also be very short.

Fannish 5

[community profile] fannish5: 5 (canon) couples that seemingly came out of nowhere:

Feferi/Sollux on Homestuck. I mean, I like them, and I was never a TA/AA shipper (I pale ship them), so it didn't bother me. But even looking back, I don't think there was so much as a hint before the kiss. And after, there wasn't much about them being matesprits, right up until the end.

It turns out I forgot to tell some of my friends I was following them on Tumblr. That was an interesting conversation.

Anyway.

This post is an optical illusion. I am actually studying thermodynamics for my biochem quiz tomorrow, not posting.

So this week's [community profile] fannish5: Five of your favorite characters are going to a Halloween party. What costumes are they wearing?

My first thought was CrossGen characters, which is bizarre, because they went out of business about six years ago, so why would they pop up before more recent fandoms? Anyway, the thought of Giselle in a classic black witch's costume is too hilarious not to share. But for reals:

1. Kenzi from Lost Girl dresses as a harlequin clown, because there is nothing scarier than clowns.

2. Astrid from Fringe dresses in a gown and wimple which she did not buy in a Renn Faire, obviously, because she doesn't go to those, and whatever her loser ex told you to the contrary is nothing but a vindictive lie. She does look good in velvet, though.

3. Veronica Mars dresses as Carmen Sandiego FTW. You know she played the hell out of those games when she was twelve.

4. Jamie Madrox from X-Factor would dress as Cyclops if he wasn't afraid Cyke would toast him for his troubles. So he dresses like Indiana Jones. Not because Terry has a crush on Harrison Ford, though, because that would be weird.

5. Faith from BtVS has probably never been to a proper Halloween party in her life. She doesn't really get how the concept works and so Dawn makes her wear a classic purple Batgirl costume, which is truly a WTF choice. Halfway through the party she changes into one of Buffy's minidresses and they end up duking it out and spilling all the punch.

Princess Evil

lea_hazel: Don't make me look up from my book (Basic: Reading)
[community profile] fannish5 of the week: Name your five favorite evil characters.

  1. X-Men: Magneto. There's something ludicrous and yet elegant about a villain who's simultaneously tragic and sympathetic, as well as a cackling, finger-steepling, gaudy-helmet-wearing overlord. FCOL, he founded a society called the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. But he's brilliant and filled with righteous rage, and underneath the trappings of comic book villainy there's a kind of disastrous misdirected fear that strikes true.

  2. BtVS: The Mayor. Villains are so often weighted down with all sorts of pointless shorthand characteristics, it's still hilarious to see an ultra-wholesome teetotaler plot doom and destruction. Seeing him become a father figure to his sword-arm is downright touching. And still, sufficiently easy to hate.

  3. Order of the Stick: Redcloak. I haven't even read the prequel (yet!) but Redcloak is a perfect counterpoint to the joke-cracking pile-o-bones he reluctantly calls boss. He's evil, but he's doing it for a cause, but he's definitely not just "technically" evil, and he's definitely dangerous. The idea that he might change alignment and find himself on the side of the heroes (for the right reward) is simultaneously impossible and highly appealing. If I were a different sort of fan, I'd probably be fighting tooth and claw to say he's not really evil, and he must be redeemed.

  4. AtLA: Azula. Many people two many terrible things throughout the series. Azula is the scariest, I think, even though Ozai is technically more dangerous. She's validated by being considered a success by her father, and by her obvious talent, intelligence and skill. It's the idea that she's a winner, that she's the hero of the story, that makes her so dangerous. Depite being terrifying (to me) and not at all sympathetic (again, YMMV), redeeming her is tempting just because it's such a waste.

  5. Probably most animated Disney villains could go here, but let's go with Ursula the sea witch. Sea witches are cool, dammit. Maleficent could work also, she's equally hammy and she's a freaking dragon.

I have weird definitions of things like "villain" and "evil" and so my list is a little weird, and actually neglects a lot of my favorite villains. I mean, the original post said "evil" and most of my favorite villains (or antagonists) are not really evil. Actually, I don't really believe in evil, I think. I definitely don't think I could ever write a really evil character. I used to have a bunch back when I role played a lot. I quite liked a lot of them, but nowadays, I don't think I'm up to it.

Maybe evil TS3 Sims count. I have a family of four that's evil, so maybe they count.
